NEW ORLEANS - Twenty-one members of the Golden Gopher women's track & field team have been named USTFCCCA All-Academic honorees for the 2014 indoor and outdoor seasons, the USTFCCCA announced Tuesday.
Minnesota led all NCAA Division I women's teams with 21 honorees, well ahead of the second-highest total of 13 posted by both BYU and Nebraska. Ten other teams were represented by 10 or more honorees, including indoor national champion Oregon with 12.
Among the 21 Gophers honored this season, 10 are repeat honorees, including three-time All-Academic award recipients Laura Docherty, Molly Kayfes and Katie Moraczewski. Liz Berkholtz, Maggie Bollig, Kelli Budd, Katie Hill, Katie Murgic, Devin Stanford and Jessica Waldvogel picked up the second academic honor of their careers as well.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track & Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met at least one of the following athletic standards. For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org. For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
The SEC edged out the Big Ten as the best represented conference with its 91 selections to the Big Ten's 87. The ACC earned 61 awards, and schools from the Big 12 claimed 53.
Including the Scholar Athletes of the Year, a total of 727 women from 193 institutions earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors for their combined academic and athletic accomplishments.
The USTFCCCA also named Minnesota one of 208 teams to receive the 2014 Division I All-Academic Track & Field team award. Teams are honored for earning a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or higher, and the Gophers posted a 3.48 GPA. Minnesota was one of 10 Big Ten teams honored with this award, trailing only Indiana's 3.52 GPA.
