Murphy, Alums Set for USATF Championships

MINNEAPOLIS - Nicolle Murphy will join three University of Minnesota alumni in competing at the 2014 USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships this week. Murphy, a soon-to-be sophomore, will compete in the javelin while former Gophers Gabriele Grunewald (Anderson) and Heather Kampf (Dorniden) are set to race in the 1,500-meter run and Liz Podominick will compete in the discus.
The USATF Outdoor Championships will be held at Sacramento State University's Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, Calif., Thursday through Sunday. In conjunction with this meet will be the USATF Junior Outdoor Combined Events on Wednesday and Thursday. This will serve as the qualifier for the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships in Eugene, Ore., July 22-27, 2014.
Murphy earned a trip to the USATF Outdoor Championships after her career-best performance at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships this spring. Murphy's mark of 175-9 (53.58m) surpassed the USATF qualifying standard (173-10, 53.00m). The Arkansas City, Kan., native also earned All-Big Ten Second Team honors for her second-place finish in the B1G javelin throw.
Murphy wrapped up her rookie season with the Gophers tied for fifth among Minnesota throwers all-time in the javelin. She enters the USATF Outdoor Championships seeded 14th and is set to compete Thursday at 8 p.m. CT.
Meanwhile, former Gophers Grunewald, Kampf and Podominick will also compete at the USATF Championships.
Grunewald returns to the meet after finishing 11th in the 1,500m last year with a time of 4:32.93. She is seeded third with a time of 4:01.48.
Kampf also competed in the USATF Outdoor Championships last year, finishing sixth in the 800m in 2:00.68. Kampf was an eight-time All-American and the 2006 NCAA champion in the indoor 800m with the Gophers. She is seeded seventh in the 1,500m with a seed time of 4:07.15.
Podominick enters the discus competition with the fourth-best seeded mark at 61.38m. She was the 2013 USA Outdoor Championships discus bronze medalist with a throw of 199-1 (60.69m). Podominick was a four-time Big Ten champion and an eight-time NCAA qualifier while competing for the Maroon & Gold as well.
Grunewald and Kampf will compete in the first round of the 1,500m at 9:03 p.m. CT Friday night. The 1,500m final is scheduled for 4:39 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Podominick will compete in the discus at 1:45 p.m. Sunday as well.
