A foursome of former University of Minnesota women’s track and field athletes will be competing this week at the USA Outdoor Championships, which will be held in Des Moines, Iowa from June 19-23. Gabriele Anderson, Jamie Cheever and Heather Kampf (Dorniden) will represent the Golden Gophers on the track, while Liz Podominic will be competing in a field event.
After narrowly missing a spot on the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team in the 1500 meters, Gabriele Anderson looks to reach the podium at this week. Anderson enters the meet with the sixth fastest time (4:04.84) and will be in the second of two heats on Thursday at 4:40 p.m. The top three times from each heat and the next six best times advance to the finals.
Jamie Cheever will be competing in the steeplechase and currently has the best time entering the meet (9:29.13). She will lead the second of two heats on Thursday at 3 p.m. The top three times from each heat and the next six best times advance to the finals. Cheever took 12th in the steeplechase at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials.
Heather Kampf (Dorniden) will be racing in the 800m on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. Kampf holds the 12th fastest time in the field of 34 competitors at 2:01.14. The eight-time All-American and 2006 NCAA Indoor 800m Champion is considered one of the most decorated Minnesota track and field athletes in program history. Last season, Kampf took seventh in the 800m at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore. The top two times from each heat automatically advance to the semifinals along with the next six best times across all heats.
Liz Podominic is the lone field competitor from the Gopher family as she will participate in discus. She enters Sunday’s competition with the second-best toss of the year at 204-5 (62.32m). Podominic, who took fifth at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, throws on Sunday at 2:20 p.m. in the second of two flights.
