MINNEAPOLIS – University of Minnesota redshirt freshman Ashley Ramacher has been named the Big Ten Conference Outdoor Track & Field Freshman of the Year as the B1G announced its 2018 outdoor season award recipients on Wednesday.
Ramacher wrapped up her first season competing in uniform for the Golden Gophers as a Second Team All-American and Second Team All-Big Ten honoree in high jump. She represented the Maroon & Gold at the NCAA Championship, tying for 12th in high jump at 1.73m (5-08.00). Ramacher finished as B1G high jump runner-up, helping Minnesota to the program's seventh overall and third outdoor conference title. The Eden Prairie, Minn., native cleared a career-best 1.82m (5-11.50) at the Big Ten meet to tie for third among all-time Gopher high jumpers.
Ramacher is the sixth Gopher to collect B1G Freshman of the Year honors and the first since 2006. She joins Aubrey Schmitt (1998 outdoor), Tahesia Harrigan (2002 outdoor), Liz Roehrig (2005 indoor), Liz Podominick (2005 outdoor), and Heather Dorniden (2006 indoor and 2006 outdoor) among Minnesota's Freshman of the Year honorees.
During the 2018 indoor season, Gophers thrower Kaitlyn Long was honored as the Big Ten Indoor Field Athlete of the Year. In addition, director of women's track & field and cross country Matt Bingle was selected as both indoor and outdoor Big Ten Coach of the Year as Minnesota swept the indoor and outdoor B1G team titles for the first time in program history this year.
