Gophers Total 13 All-America Honors

MINNEAPOLIS – All fourteen of Minnesota's NCAA Championship qualifiers have been recognized as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has announced the list of student-athletes who earned USTFCCCA All-America honors for the 2018 outdoor track & field season.

Twelve individuals totaled 13 All-America awards led by First Team All-American Emma Spagnola following her seventh-place finish in the 400m hurdles. Emerald Egwim earned two Second Team All-America awards in the 400m dash and 4x400m relay as well.

First-team honors went to those athletes from individual events and relay teams that finished first through eighth, while those who finished ninth through 16th were named to the second team. Honorable mention was given to those who finished 17th through 24th.

Behind Spagnola's first team honors, Minnesota totaled 12 Second Team All-America accolades. Ayesha Champagnie (heptathlon) and Temi Ogunrinde (hammer throw) both placed ninth in their respective events and earned their first All-America awards of their careers.

Agnes Esser matched her highest NCAA finish of her career with an 11th-place showing in the discus after also placing 11th in weight throw at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Championship. She secured her third All-America nod after also earning Second Team honors in the discus in 2016.

Along with her 12th-place showing in the 400m, Egwim joined Rachel Schow, Titania Markland, and Val Larson in finishing 14th in the 4x400m relay. Egwim wrapped up her Gopher career as a four-time All-American while Markland finished her career as a two-time All-American in the 4x400m relay. Schow and Larson both made their NCAA Championship debuts and earned their first All-America awards.



High jumpers Heta Tuuri and Ashley Ramacher tied for 12th place to secure each of their first All-America honors. Tuuri improved on her finish at the 2016 NCAA Championship where she tied for 17th in high jump while Ramacher made her NCAA debut this spring.

Nicolle Murphy placed 14th in javelin to secure the third All-America award of her career after placing fourth at the 2016 NCAA Championship and sixth at the 2015 NCAA Championship in her two previous NCAA berths.

Nayoka Clunis rounded out Minnesota's Second Team All-Americans after her 15th-place showing in hammer throw. Clunis wrapped up her first season with the Maroon & Gold as a two-time Second Team All-American after placing 16th in the weight throw at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Championship.

Spagnola (100m hurdles), Markland (400m), Kiley Sabin (shot put) and Madeline Strandemo (3,000m steeplechase) also received All-America honorable mention for their performances at the national championship.

USC (53 points), Georgia (52 points), and Stanford (51 points) finished as the top three women's teams at the NCAA Championship while Kentucky (46) and Florida (42) rounded out the top five teams.
