Coach Says... "We're excited to compete and looking forward to the weekend," Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Matt Bingle said. "We're going in with an opportunity to build on our improvement from the indoor season. The goal at the end of indoor was to continue to improve, and a lot of people have gotten better. We've set two school records and a lot of PRs."
Returning Scorers Several of the Gophers' 2012 point scorers are back again this year. Todea-Kay Willis, the 2011 long jump champion, earned All-Big Ten Second Team honors as the runner-up in 2012. She also led off the school record-setting third-place 4x100-meter relay. Kylie Peterson also ran on that relay and finished sixth in the open 100m. Then-freshman Christina DeLakis finished third in the shot put.
Docherty Breaks 25-Year-Old Record Junior Laura Docherty crossed the finish line at the Stanford Invitational (March 29) in 33:24.93 to break Minnesota's record in the 10,000 meters. Eileen Donaghy's 1988 time of 33:31.96 was the second-oldest school record still standing. Docherty currently holds the fastest 10K time in the Big Ten.
Brooks Second All-Time After a personal-reocrd 800-meter race, Alena Brooks now trails only Heather Dorniden in the Gopher record books. Her second-place time of 2:05.82 at the Crimson Tide Invite (April 6) is the second-best in the Big Ten entering this weekend. Brooks now ranks second all-time in both the indoor and outdoor 800m.
Loberg Wins Collegiate Debut Katie Loberg joined the track and field team following four years with Gopher basketball. She won her first collegiate high jump competition, clearing 5-6 at the Tom Cat Open (April 12).
DMR Wins in Record Time Minnesota's distance medley relay team broke the school record in winning the race at the 104th edition of the Drake Relays (April 27). Katie Hill, Alena Brooks, Te'Shon Adderley and Laura Docherty's time of 11:06.47 helped the Gophers place fourth in the Hy-Vee Cup. Docherty received the baton in fourth place, but anchored the relay with a 4:37 split.
