Gopher Women's 4x1,600m Captures Drake Relays Title
The Minnesota women’s 4x1,600-meter relay broke the school record by an amazing 35 seconds in capturing the Drake Relays title in the event at the America’s Athletic Classic in Des Moines, Iowa on Saturday. The Golden Gopher foursome of Jamie Cheever, Heather Dorniden, Ladia Albertson-Junkans and Emily Brown posted a time of 19 minutes, 10.92 seconds, easily surpassing the old school record of 19:41.28 set at the Drake Relays a year ago.
The Gophers also had two throwers compete in the hammer throw on Saturday. Nina Cotolupenco placed sixth with a throw of 186 feet, 10 inches, her fifth regional qualifying mark of the season. Liz Alabi finished ninth with an effort of 173-6.
Minnesota also competed at the rain-soaked Macalester Invitational on Saturday, winning the team title with 186 points and winning a dozen events.
On the track, Minnesota won titles in the 400 meters (Katie Grundman, 57.7), 400-meter hurdles (Gina Dare, 1:02.7), 3,000 meters (Carie Steil, 10:38.7), 5,000 meters (Kristin Johansen, 18:31.44), 10,000 meters (Jen Hess, 36:43.36) and the 4x100 relay (47.98).
The Gophers captured the top three places in both the pole vault and the hammer. Laura Massey cleared a season-best 12-5 3/4 for first place. Andrea Smith also cleared that height for second place. Ashley Nord was third with a height of 12-0.
Laura Brummer won the hammer with a throw of 157-2, edging teammate Jessica Stephan, who was second at 156-1. Kari Schmidt placed third with a throw of 140-9.
Other field event champions for the Gophers were Liz Podominick in the shot put (44-9) and discus (146-10), Amanda Solberg in the javelin (116-3) and Brianna Polus in the high jump (5-0 1/4).
