Gophers at Drake
Minnesota has a strong history at the Drake Relays. The Gophers have been a part of the last 27 straight Drake Relays, with 23 event titles in those years. In 2011, Minnesota won its third consecutive title in the 4x1,600-meter relay when Nikki Swenson, Missa Varpness, Stephanie Price, and Elizabeth Yetzer clocked in at 19:06.52. The Gophers also earned third-place finishes in the 4x800 and distance medley relays last year.
Steve Scott Invitational
This marks the 18th year of the adidas/Steve Scott Invitational. The annual meet is named for three-time Olympian, six-time UC-Irvine All-American, and USATF Hall of Famer Steve Scott. Field events will begin Saturday at 4:00 p.m. CT, and track events will start at 8:00 p.m. CT. Both track and field events will resume at 2:00 p.m. CT Sunday.
Coach Bingle Says
“We want to stay healthy through the weekend and feel positive about things,” head coach Matt Bingle said about the Gophers. “The biggest thing is to go in there and really fight. They’ve been training really well. At Irvine, we’ll have great weather. Drake’s going to be a little cooler. But I just want to see a good fight. I want them to go in with an attitude and compete well this weekend.”
Two weekends ago, the Gophers competed at Georgia. Devin Stanford was the sole event champion for Minnesota, winning the discus with a personal best throw of 154-02 (46.99m). Alena Brooks had a successful return to the track, running a 54.08 400-meter dash and leading off the 4x400 relay that finished about one second off the school record in 3:39.22. Last week, four Gophers won events at the Holst Invitational, including three throwing events.
