A small group from the sprints, jumps and hurdles will compete at the LSU Alumni Gold meet, while distance runners and throwers will be included in the larger group traveling to Iowa's Musco Twilight meet. Both meets will take place Saturday. The Musco Twilight will air on BTN on Saturday, April 27 at 11 a.m.
"Most of the team had last weekend off, so I'm excited to see what they can after some extra rest," Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Matt Bingle said. "We're looking to run fast in the 4x400-meter relay at LSU, and some of the distance runners will be in their main events at Iowa."
This Looks Familiar
The Gophers competed at both the LSU Alumni Gold and Musco Twilight meets a couple years ago in 2011. Todea-Kay Willis set the long jump school record at LSU, leaping 21-1 1/2. At Iowa, Cassy Opitz (1,500 meters) and Kelsey Joson (triple jump) recorded event victories.
Docherty Breaks 25-Year-Old Record
Junior Laura Docherty crossed the finish line at the Stanford Invitational in 33:24.93 to break Minnesota's record in the 10,000 meters. Eileen Donaghy's 1988 time of 33:31.96 was the second-oldest school record still standing. Docherty currently holds the fastest 10K time in the Big Ten, and the ninth-fastest nationally.
Brooks Second All-Time
After a personal-reocrd 800-meter race, Alena Brooks now trails only Heather Dorniden in the Gopher record books. Her second-place time of 2:05.82 at the Crimson Tide Invite is the best in the Big Ten entering this weekend. Brooks now ranks second all-time in both the indoor and outdoor 800m.
Loberg Wins Collegiate Debut
Katie Loberg joined the track and field team following four years with Gopher basketball. She won her first collegiate high jump competition, clearing 5-6 at the Tom Cat Open.
