Track and field and cross country student-athletes were among those honored at the University of Minnesota athletic department's Golden Goldys/Scholar Athlete banquet held Monday night at TCF Bank Stadium. The event marked the seventh year of the Golden Goldys and the 24th year of the Scholar Athlete banquet.
Gopher women's cross country earned recognition as the Outstanding Academic Team in the large team category. To earn this award, the team achieved the highest GPA among teams of 22 or more people during the last spring and fall semesters.
Three of the department's Top Five Award recipients came from the track and field/cross country program. Rachel Drake, Kathryn Ritter and Becca Gusmer have three of the highest cumulative GPAs among all Gopher student-athletes.
Additionally, Laura Docherty was one of five finalists for Female Breakthrough Athlete of the Year. Last spring, she scored in two distance races at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships and went on to compete in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA West Preliminary Round.
