Inclement weather has forced Concordia-St. Paul to cancel its meet this weekend. The Gophers will instead compete indoors at St. Thomas's Tom Cat Open, which begins at 11 a.m. Saturday. Members of the Gopher distance group will compete, and former Gopher basketball player Katie Loberg will make her debut in the high jump.
"It will be good to get some of our distance runners on the track this weekend, especially those who have not raced in a few weeks," Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Matt Bingle said. "We're also excited to have Katie Loberg joining the team. We wanted to get her in a meet as soon as we were able."
Docherty Breaks 25-Year-Old Record
Junior Laura Docherty crossed the finish line at the Stanford Invitational in 33:24.93 to break Minnesota's record in the 10,000 meters. Eileen Donaghy's 1988 time of 33:31.96 was the second-oldest school record still standing. Docherty currently holds the fastest 10K time in the Big Ten, and the ninth-fastest nationally. She was featured in the Minnesota Daily last week.
Brooks Second All-Time
After a personal-reocrd 800-meter race, Alena Brooks now trails only Heather Dorniden in the Gopher record books. Her second-place time of 2:05.82 at the Crimson Tide Invite is the best in the Big Ten entering this weekend. Brooks now ranks second all-time in both the indoor and outdoor 800m.
Moraczewski Also Tops in the Big Ten
In addition to Docherty and Brooks, Katie Moraczewski leads the conference in her main event. Her time of 10:23.55 at the Stanford Invitational ranks first in the 3,000m steeplechase. GopherSports.com caught up with Moraczewski this morning.
