Spec Towns Invite to Highlight Weekend Slate

MINNEAPOLIS – The Golden Gopher women’s track and field team will again split the squad between two meets this weekend. Minnesota is set to compete at the Spec Towns Invitational in Athens, Ga., Friday and Saturday and the Holst Invitational hosted by Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday.
About the 2014 Spec Towns Invitational
The University of Georgia is hosting the annual Spec Towns National Team Invitational this weekend. Action gets underway with men’s and women’s triple jump, women’s shot put and men’s and women’s hammer throw on Friday afternoon. Saturday’s competition is slated to begin with the women’s javelin at 9:30 a.m. CT with the women’s 5,000-meter run kicking off the running events at 12:10 p.m. CT.

Concordia-St. Paul is set to host the 2014 Holst Invitational at the Golden Bears’ Sea Foam Stadium this Saturday.
Last Time Out: Gophers Win USF Collegiate, Earn Personal Bests at Stanford
The Gophers won nine event titles en route to claiming the team title at the 2014 USF Collegiate hosted by the University of South Florida, last weekend. Minnesota won the meet with 205 points, edging second-place Kennesaw State (192) by 13 points. Host South Florida (159.50) and Cincinnati (113.50) rounded out the team standings.
The Gopher sprinters and field event specialists combined for nine titles. Erin Hawkins (100m), Te'Shon Adderley (800m), Frances Conlin (400m hurdles) and the 4x400-meter relay team picked up wins on the track, while four different throwers won their respective events. Devin Stanford (hammer throw), Nicolle Murphy (javelin), Kailee Kamps (shot put) and Angie Guenther (discus) swept the throwing events, and Katie Murgic won the pole vault.
Meanwhile, seven Gopher distance runners made their 2014 outdoor track debuts at the Stanford Invitational last weekend, led by senior Kelli Budd in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and sophomore Liz Berkholtz in the 10,000-meter run. Budd ran a 10:17.50 and took over 17 seconds off her best time to move from seventh to fourth on the Gophers' all-time list in the 3,000m steeplechase, while Berkholtz cut nearly a minute off her previous personal best time in the 10,000m with a 34:12.67 and improved from 10th to sixth all-time.
USTFCCCA National Rankings Update
No. 1 Texas A&M, No. 2 Florida, No. 3 Texas, No. 4 Oregon and No. 5 Kentucky make up the top five in the USTFCCCA NCAA Division I National Team Rankings for the week of April 8. No. 14 Penn State is the lone Big Ten Conference team ranked in the top 25. The next USTFCCCA rankings are slated to be released Tuesday, April 15.
Six Gophers land among the nation’s top track and field athletes according to the USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Event Report, led by Laura Docherty ranked ninth in the 10,000-meter run (33:24.93, in 2013) and 48th in the 5,000-meter run (16:10.63, in 2013). Liz Berkholtz joins Docherty among the top 10,000m runners, ranked 35th (34:12.67, in 2014).
Two Gophers are also ranked in the steeplechase: Katie Moraczewski is 28th (10:14.07, in 2013) and Kelli Budd is 36th (10:17.50, in 2014). Te’Shon Adderley ranks 41st in the 800-meter run (2:06.38, in 2013), and Devin Stanford ranks 32nd in the discus with a scored mark of 170-4 (51.93m) from 2013.
All-Time Top 10 Gophers
Five Gophers have already registered all-time top-10 program record marks this outdoor season. Erin Hawkins ran a personal-best 11.78 in the 100-meter dash to rank eighth all-time last weekend. Liz Berkholtz (34:12.67) climbed from 10th to sixth all-time in the 10,000-meter run, and Kelli Budd (10:17.50) moved from seventh to fourth all-time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with their performances at the Stanford Invitational. Lyndsey Thorpe cracked the top 10 in the hammer throw, ranking ninth with a throw of 56.02m, and freshman Nicolle Murphy ranks ninth in the javelin (46.73m).
