MINNEAPOLIS – The Golden Gopher women’s track and field team is back in action this weekend, splitting the squad between two meets. The distance runners are headed to Palo Alto, Calif., for the Stanford Invitational, while the sprinters and field events competitors are set for the USF Collegiate in Tampa, Fla., on Friday.
About the 2014 USF Collegiate
The University of South Florida is hosting the 2014 USF Collegiate on Friday, April 4. Throwing events are scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. CT with the men’s hammer throw. Women’s long jump is set for 9 a.m. CT, and running events get underway at 11:30 a.m. CT with the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
About the 2014 Stanford Invitational
The Stanford Invitational is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. CT both Friday and Saturday this weekend. Ten Gophers will make their 2014 outdoor debuts as Minnesota’s distance squad heads to the west coast. Maggie Bollig and Kaitlin Mincke will debut in the 1,500-meter run, while Kelli Budd, Katie Moraczewski and Kaila Urick are entered in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The 5,000-meter run field includes Laura Docherty, Becca Dyson and Molly Kayfes, and two Gophers are set for the 10,000-meter run in Liz Berkholtz and Rachel Drake. All four events are scheduled for Friday evening.
2013 Stanford Invitational Rewind
Last season, Laura Docherty broke one of the longest standing Minnesota program records at the Stanford Invitational, running a 33:24.93 in the 10,000-meter run. Docherty broke former Gopher Eileen Donaghy’s 10,000m of 33:31.96, which was set in 1988. Donaghy’s record time was the second oldest Minnesota outdoor record behind Jane Oas’ 200-meter dash record set in 1976.
Last Time Out: Throwers, Relays Lead Gophers at TSU Relays
Minnesota opened its 2014 outdoor season with big performances from the throwers and relay teams at the TSU Relays in Houston, Texas. Devin Stanford placed first in both the discus (161-01, 49.11m) and the hammer throw (184-01, 56.10m) to lead the team. Behind Stanford, Minnesota picked up six other top-three finishes in the throwing events. Katie Loberg tied for first place in the high jump with a leap of 5-05.75 (1.67m). The Gophers' 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter relay teams highlighted the running events with a pair of second-place finishes at the TSU Relays. The 4x200m squad of Megan Geyen, Jessica Waldvogel, Erin Hawkins and Titania Markland clocked a 1:37.27, while the 4x100m team of Markland, Akuoma Omeoga, Waldvogel and Hawkins finished in 46.88.
USTFCCCA National Rankings Update
No. 1 Texas A&M, No. 2 Oregon, No. 3 Texas, No. 4 Florida and No. 5 Kentucky make up the top five in the USTFCCCA NCAA Division I National Team Preseason Rankings for the 2014 outdoor season. No. 17 Penn State is the lone Big Ten Conference team ranked in the top 25. The next USTFCCCA rankings are slated to be released Tuesday, April 8.
Four Gophers land among the nation’s top track and field athletes according to the USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Event Report, led by Laura Docherty ranked fourth in the 10,000-meter run (33:24.93 ) and 30th in the 5,000-meter run (16:10.63). Katie Moraczewski is 24th in the steeplechase (10:14.07), and Te’Shon Adderley ranks 36th in the 800-meter run (2:06.38). Devin Stanford ranks 32nd in the discus with a scored mark of 170-4 (51.93m) and is also among the top-50 in hammer throw, ranked 48th with a throw of 189-1 (57.63m).

Next weekend, the Gophers are set to compete at the Spec Towns Invitational and Heptathlon in Athens, Ga., April 11-12 and the Holst Invitational hosted by Concordia-St. Paul on April 12.
