Five Gophers Named All-Americans
March 13, 2018

MINNEAPOLIS – Five Golden Gophers are among the 2018 USTFCCCA All-America honorees following the conclusion of the 2018 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field season, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Monday.

NCAA weight throw champion Kaitlyn Long and Kiley Sabin, who placed fifth in the shot put, were named First-Team All-Americans while Agnes Esser, Karlie Place, and Nayoka Clunis earned Second-Team honors. Esser finished 11th in weight throw, Place was 12th in pole vault, and Clunis finished 16th in weight throw at the NCAA Championship. Ayesha Champagnie was recognized as honorable mention after competing in the long jump but fouling all three attempts.

Athletes of member institutions who finished in the top-eight of their respective individual events and relays at the 2018 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships this past weekend took home First-Team All-American honors, while those who placed ninth through 16th were named Second-Team All-Americans. The remaining athletes were bestowed with Honorable Mention.

The Big Ten Conference recorded 92 All-Americans, but no conference had more overall All-Americans than the SEC, which nabbed 181 honors. The MPSF was a distant second with 104, followed by the Big Ten (92), Big 12 (81) and the ACC (79).

Sabin and Esser each picked up their second All-American nod of their careers after Sabin received Second Team honors for the indoor shot put in 2017 and Esser was a Second Team honoree in the discus outdoors in 2016. The other Gophers earned their first NCAA Division I All-America awards this season.

Minnesota tied for 14th in the team standings at the NCAA Indoor Championship with 14 points from two scoring finishes. Along with 10 points from Long's NCAA title, Sabin picked up four points in the team race with her fifth-place showing.
