Sonnenberg Moves to No. 2 All-Time in Pole Vault
Minnesota junior Samantha Sonnenberg cleared a career-best height of 13 feet, 6 1/2 inches in the pole vault to move into a tie for the No. 2 spot (with Andrea Smith, 2008) on the Golden Gophers’ top-10 list in the event. Sonnenberg, an NCAA provisional qualifier, tied for second at the Parents’ Day Open at the University Fieldhouse on Saturday.
Minnesota rested most of its top performers in preparation for next weekend’s Big Ten Championships. The Gophers honored their senior class and welcomed parents at today’s meet.
The Gophers captured two events titles, both in the field events. DeAnne Hahn won the shot put with a throw of 46-2 and added a second place finish in the weight throw with a heave of 59-9. Natalie Devine was the second Gopher champion, winning the high jump with a height of 5-7.
Linnea Johnson and Jamie Dittmar turned in Minnesota’s top finishes on the track. Johnson placed second in the 200-meter dash in a time of 25.24 seconds and added a fourth-place showing in the 60 meters in 7.82 seconds. Dittmar placed second in the 600-meter dash with a time of 1:34.05.
Minnesota travels to Penn State next weekend for the Big Ten Championships. The Gophers look to capture their third straight indoor team title.
