MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota women's track & field team climbed one place to No. 10 in the nation in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Week Three National Team Computer Rankings, released Monday.
Minnesota's appearance in the top 10 is the program's first since the second week of the 2009 season.
The Gophers are the top-ranked Big Ten Conference team, ahead of No. 13 Michigan, No. 15 Wisconsin, and No. 23 Indiana. The SEC leads the top-25 with 12 teams, followed by the Big Ten, Big 12, and MPSF with four teams apiece.
No. 1 Arkansas, No. 2 Georgia, No. 3 Oregon, No. 4 USC, and No. 5 Kentucky make up the nation's top five teams, followed by No. 6 Florida, No. 7 LSU, No. 8 Texas A&M, and No. 9 Texas ahead of the No. 10 Gophers.
The Gophers' move into the nation's top 10 comes after the team competed at the Power Five Invite hosted by Michigan last weekend. Minnesota was led by the distance medley relay team of Bethany Hasz, Emerald Egwim, Titania Markland, and Madeline Strandemo, which recorded the fifth-best time in the nation so far this season at 11:07.53.
The Gophers remain the nation's event squad leaders for the best foursome in the country by event in the shot put, weight throw, and pentathlon. Minnesota also ranks second in the 5,000m, fourth in high jump, and 11th in the 400m
Minnesota is set for three meets this weekend as the sprints, jumps, pole vault, and relays are set to compete at the Music City Classic in Nashville, Tenn., while the distance and throws groups compete at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa. A group will also compete locally at the UST Showcase hosted by the University of St. Thomas.
