MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota women's track and field team travels to Ames, Iowa, to compete at Iowa State's Bill Bergan Invitational this weekend. The meet will be held Friday and Saturday at the Cyclones' Lied Recreational Center.
Last Time Out: Gophers Win Jack Johnson Classic
Minnesota scored 147.50 to finish first in its first scored meet of the season at last weekend's Jack Johnson Classic at the U of M Fieldhouse. The Gophers finished ahead of second-place Iowa (104.50), followed by North Dakota State (98), South Dakota (71) and Western Michigan (63) rounding out the top five in the 10-team meet.
Senior Alena Brooks won Minnesota's lone individual title, clocking a 2:08.16 to come in first in the 800-meter run. Meanwhile, three Gophers earned a place in the Gopher women's track and field all-time top-10 with their performances at the Jack Johnson Classic: Alex Beckman (ninth in 60-meter hurdles, 8.81), Lyndsey Thorpe (ninth in weight throw, 55-10.5, 17.03m) and Audra Winter (ninth in pentathlon, 3,504).
USTFCCCA National Rankings Update
No. 1 Oregon, No. 2 Texas, No. 3 Texas A&M, No. 4 Florida and No. 5 Georgia make up the top five in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Week 1 Division I National Team Computer Rankings. Two Big Ten Conference teams are ranked in the top 25 in No. 12 Michigan and No. 14 Purdue. The next rankings will be released Tuesday, Feb. 4.
Brooks Lands Among Top NCAA Qualifiers
Senior Alena Brooks is among the NCAA's top 800-meter runners entering this weekend's competition. She is currently seeded fifth at 2:06.70 based on her 2:08.16 last weekend and her performance in 2013 (2:06.24).
2013 Bill Bergan Invitational Rewind
The Gopher women did not compete at the Bill Bergan Invitational last season, but Minnesota won the men's meet with 123.25 points. The Cyclone women used record-setting performances from Ese Okoro in the 400-meter dash and Christina Hillman in the shot put to win their home meet in 2013, edging out second-place Wisconsin 105-95.
