This weekend the Minnesota women’s track and field team will be down at the Minnesota State Open, in Mankato, Minn. The two-day event begins on Friday with the pentathlon, the Gophers will not have any participates in the pentathlon, but will have entries in the 3,000m competing. Action gets underway at 4 p.m
On Saturday the rest of the Gophers will be competing, minus the throwers who will have the weekend off. It will be full day of track action at Myers Field House with things set to get underway at 9 a.m.
Minnesota took the top three spots in the 60m dash and 800m run, to cruise to a Jack Johnson Classic team title with 190 points. Chimerem Okoroji (7.52), Chidera Obasih (7.60) and Sasha Davis (7.64) were the Gophers top three in the 60m, while Heather Brunn (2:14.07), Katie Hill (2:14.07) and Megan Smith (2:14.89) lead the way in the 800m.
DeAnne Hahn landed a throw of 17.55m (57-7) to win her second title of the season in the weight throw. Jeri Johnson-Chambers finished third for Minnesota with a mark of 17.14m (56-3), which was more than three feet further than her top throw last week.
Christina DeLakis won the shot put with a toss of 15.11m (49-7). It was the second title of the 2012 season for the redshirt freshman, who captured the title last week with a mark of 14.86m (48-9). Hahn finished third for Minnesota with a mark of 14.78m (48-6).
THE GOLDEN GOPHER COACHING STAFF
Matt Bingle is in his sixth season as the Golden Gophers head women’s track & field coach. He was promoted to Director of Women’s Track and Field/Cross Country during the offseason. Bingle heads an extremely experienced coaching staff that includes assistants Gary Wilson (Distance) Lynne Anderson (Throwers), Sarah Hesser (Distance) and Caroline White (Pole Vault).
