The Golden Gopher track and field team is set to host its biggest home meet of the season, the Jack Johnson Classic. The two-day scored meet features the Gophers and seven other teams: South Dakota, South Dakota State, North Dakota State, Augustana, Western Michigan, Northern Illinois and Manitoba.
"It's good to be at home and compete on our own track," director of track and field and cross country Matt Bingle said. "This will be the first time when everybody on the team is actually competing. Obviously it's still early, but it will be good to be in a big meet and see how we compete. Some people I'm looking forward to seeing are Alena Brooks in the 600 meters, Kylie Peterson in the 60 meters, Todea-Kay Willis in the long jump and the full distance group, including Laura Docherty and Molly Kayfes."
RECAPPING WEEK ONE
Some of the Gophers competed at NDSU's Bison Classic and the Gopher men's Northwest Open. Some highlights from the Bison Classic included wins by Kylie Peterson (40-yard dash, 5.02), Todea-Kay Willis (long jump, 19-2), Alena Brooks (800 meters, 2:11.10), Becca Dyson (3,000 meters, 9:48.59) and Bria Halama (triple jump, 38-9).
THIS ONE'S FOR JACK
This weekend's meet honors the memory of Jack Johnson, who passed away in February 2006 after serving for more than three decades as a Gopher equipment manager. Johnson will always be a part of the Minnesota women’s cross country and track programs.
FOR THE FANS
In addition to the actual competition, there will be entertainment on the side for everyone present. A DJ will be playing music during both days of the meet. Young fans can get involved with a kids' fun run and face painting. Concessions will be available in the lobby.
