The University of Minnesota women's track and field team will open up the 2013 indoor season this Saturday, Jan. 12. Some of the squad will compete at North Dakota State's Bison Classic, and others will compete at the Northwest Open hosted by the Golden Gopher men's team.
The Bison Classic will open NDSU's brand new Shelly Ellig Indoor Track and Field Facility. It will be a scored meet with South Dakota State and Manitoba competing in addition to the Gophers and Bison. Highlights of the Minnesota travel roster include Todea-Kay Willis (long jump and sprints), Kylie Peterson (sprints) and Alena Brooks (sprints/mid-distance).
"I'm looking for them to train hard, take care of their bodies and compete," director of track and field and cross country Matt Bingle said of his expectations for the first meet of the season.
Not all Gophers who compete this weekend will run in their main events. Distance runners especially will be running outside of their specialties.
