SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Minnesota freshman Nicolle Murphy finished 14th in the javelin at the 2014 USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships held at Sacramento State University's Hornet Stadium Thursday evening.
Murphy recorded a mark of 155-9 (47.48m) on her third and final attempt to finish 14th after entering the championships seeded 14th as well. Kara Patterson won the javelin with a throw of 204-10 (62.43m).
Murphy advanced to the USA championships after surpassing the USATF qualifying standard (173-10, 53.00m) with a career-best mark of 175-9 (53.58m) at the Big Ten Championships earlier this spring. The Arkansas City, Kan., native wraps up her rookie season with the Gophers tied for fifth among Minnesota throwers all-time in the javelin.
The USATF Outdoor Championships continue through Sunday with three former Gophers scheduled to compete. Minnesota alumni Gabriele Grunewald (Anderson) and Heather Kampf (Dorniden) are set to race in the 1,500-meter run on Friday and Liz Podominick will compete in the discus on Sunday.
