FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Senior Te'Shon Adderley led the Golden Gopher women's track & field team on day one of the 2014 NCAA Division I Women's Outdoor Track & Field West Preliminary Thursday.
Adderley advanced to the quarterfinal of the 800-meter run by finishing third in her first round heat at the University of Arkansas' John McDonnell Field. Adderley's time of 2:07.72 put her in 16th overall. The 800m quarterfinal is set for 7:15 p.m. Friday night.
Adderley was the lone Gopher to advance Thursday as nine Minnesota student-athletes began competition at the NCAA West Prelims. In total, Minnesota sent 15 individuals and two relay teams to compete at the NCAA qualifier, which continues Friday and Saturday.
Junior Katie Murgic cleared a lifetime-best 13-03 (4.04m) to tie for 17th in pole vault and move into sixth place in the Gopher all-time ranks. Sophomore Cami Gilson cleared 12-03.25 (3.74m) in a tie for 32nd as well.
Freshman Nicolle Murphy narrowly missed advancing to the NCAA championships, finishing 14th in the javelin with a throw of 154-06 (47.10m). Murphy wrapped up her first season as a Gopher with a Big Ten runner-up showing in the javelin and the fifth-best javelin mark in Minnesota program history (175-09, 53.58m).
Senior Megan Geyen raced the open 400-meter dash, finishing in 55.14. Geyen missed advancing to the 400m quarterfinal but is set to race on the Gophers' 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay teams on Saturday.
Fellow seniors Kaitlin Mincke and Laura Docherty wrapped up their Gopher careers at the NCAA West Prelims. In her first NCAA appearance, Mincke clocked a 4:35.96 in the 1,500-meter run, and Docherty finished the 10,000-meter run in 36:09.68. Sophomore Liz Berkholtz joined Docherty in the 10,000m, placing 22nd in 35:14.42.
Redshirt freshman Kailee Kamps also represented the Maroon and Gold on Thursday, making her NCAA debut in the shot put. Kamps did not record a mark but concluded the season with Minnesota's top shot put throw of the season at 49-01.50 (14.97m).
Action continues at the NCAA West Prelims on Friday. Gophers Devin Stanford and Angie Guenther are slated to compete in the discus at 3 p.m. before Adderley runs the 800m quarterfinal at 7:15 p.m. Seniors Kelli Budd and Katie Moraczewski and sophomore Kaila Urick will race the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 9:30 p.m. as well.
On Saturday, Geyen and Adderley will join freshman Titania Markland and junior Jessica Waldvogel in the 4x400m team, while the 4x100m team of senior Akuoma Omeoga, Geyen, Waldvogel and redshirt freshman Erin Hawkins look to improve on its season-best time of 45.29. In addition, sophomore Lyndsey Thorpe will join Stanford in Saturday's hammer throw.
The top 12 individuals and relays from both the NCAA East and West Preliminaries will advance to the NCAA finals, which are set for June 11-14 in Eugene, Ore.
