WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Minnesota earned four top-eight finishes in the heptathlon led by sophomore Jess Herauf's second-place showing at the Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships Saturday afternoon. The Gopher heptathletes added 15 points to Minnesota's team score.
Minnesota also received strong performances from freshman Nicolle Murphy, who finished as the B1G runner-up in the javelin, and senior Kelli Budd, who placed fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Saturday evening.
Through seven scored events, the Gophers are in third place with 41 points. Nebraska is in the lead with 48 points, followed by Penn State (46). Purdue (36) and Wisconsin (24) trail Minnesota to make up the top five teams.
Herauf recorded four personal-best marks en route her to B1G second-place total of 5,490 points, which also was a career high and ranks second among Gophers all-time. Herauf, an indoor second-team All-American in the pentathlon, finished as the runner-up in the pentathlon at the B1G indoor meet this season as well.
Herauf won the heptathlon shot put (43-02.50, 13.17m) and javelin (152-8, 46.54m) with career-best marks; she won the javelin by over four meters. She also recorded personal bests in long jump at 18-05 (5.61m) for fourth place and high jump at 5-04.50 (1.64m) for fifth place. She came in second in the 800-meter run in 2:20.18 as well. Herauf finished eighth in the 200m (26.01) and ninth in the 100m hurdles (15.12) to round out her B1G runner-up showing.
Behind Herauf, the remaining three Gopher heptathletes also earned points for Minnesota in the team standings. Sophomore Alex Beckman finished fifth with a career-best 5,057 points, moving into fifth all-time in the Gopher ranks, followed by redshirt freshman Audra Winter in seventh (4,908) and sophomore Amanda Beckman in eighth (4,806).
Alex Beckman recorded three career-best marks on her way to her career-high heptathlon total. She placed second in the 200-meter dash in a career-best 24.77 and finished third in the shot put at a career-best 38-11.50 (11.87m). She also recorded a career-best throw of 105-9 (32.24m) in the javelin for eighth place.
Winter's highest placing was a third-place showing in the 200m (25.18). She also recorded career bests in the shot put (38-03.25, 11.66m), 100m hurdles (14.55) and long jump (17-9, 5.41m). Meanwhile, Amanda Beckman's highest finish was a fourth-place showing in the 200m in 25.44, and she finished sixth in the javelin (111-5, 33.97m) as well.
Saturday's B1G Event Finals
Murphy secured her runner-up finish in the javelin with a career-best throw of 175-9 (53.58m), moving into fifth all-time in Gopher history. Herauf also picked up two points for the Gophers with a seventh-place finish and another career-best mark, improving on her throw during the heptathlon javelin competition with a toss of 159-7 (48.65m).
Budd finished fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:17.21 and scored five points for the team standings. Redshirt sophomore Kaila Urick was just out of scoring position in ninth in a career-best 10:26.52. Senior Katie Moraczewski finished 14th (10:30.10), and redshirt freshman Taylor Mikkalson made her B1G debut in 10:41.67 for 17th.
Sophomore Becci Osterdyk led the Gophers in the shot put, finishing 10th with a throw of 47-03.50 (14.41m). A day after her third-place finish in the hammer throw, sophomore Lyndsey Thorpe was 18th in the shot put (44-7, 13.59m).
Saturday's B1G Preliminary Events
Seniors Kaitlin Mincke and Maggie Bollig both advanced to Sunday's 1,500-meter final. Mincke clocked a career-best 4:28.62 for third in her heat and fourth overall, and Bollig finished 12th overall in 4:31.27.
Senior Te'Shon Adderley came in sixth in the 800-meter preliminaries to advance to Sunday's final. Adderley clocked a 2:07.41, her second-fastest time of the season.
Fellow senior Megan Geyen clocked the fifth-fastest preliminary time in the B1G 400-meter dash, a season-best 54.03, to advance to Sunday's final. Redshirt freshman Erin Hawkins also moved on to the finals in the 100-meter dash with a preliminary time of 11.92; she finished 12th in the 200-meter preliminaries in 24.59.
The Big Ten championships conclude Sunday at Purdue's Rankin Track & Field Stadium.
