Domski, Opitz Win Titles in Iowa

MINNEAPOLIS – Members of the Minnesota women's track and field team competed at three separate meets on Friday as the Golden Gophers were in action at the Drake Relays, the Grand View Viking Classic and the UC-San Diego Triton Invitational.
Te'Shon Adderley was the lone Gopher competing at the Friday session of the Drake Relays. The senior ran a season-best 2:07.19 for 11th place in the 800-meter run. Adderley cut three seconds off her previous best time of the 2014 outdoor season (2:10.19) and was less than one second off her career best (2:06.38).
The Gophers conclude competition at the Drake Relays on Saturday, racing the distance medley relay and the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Grand View Viking Classic
Many of the Gopher distance runners not competing at the Drake Relays took part in the Grand View Viking Classic in Des Moines, Iowa, Friday afternoon.
Senior Cassy Opitz paced six Gophers leading the way in the 1,500-meter run. Opitz clocked a first-place time of 4:39.59 for a new Grand View University Williams Stadium facility record; the top five Gophers all broke the previous facility record (4:47.60).
Behind Opitz, sophomores Stacey Swatek (4:40.24) and Andie Zeman (4:42.21) were second and third, respectively. Seniors Katie Hill (4:43.82) and Jillian Johnson (4:44.93) were fourth and fifth, followed by sophomore Anne Ferguson in sixth (4:50.80).
Junior Lauren Domski won the 800-meter run in 2:13.82 as well.
UC San Diego Triton Invitational
The two-day Triton Invitational in San Diego, Calif., began Friday with the women's hammer throw and women's discus.
Junior Devin Stanford led the Gophers in the hammer throw, placing 10th (188-08, 57.51m) among the 45-athlete field. Redshirt freshman Angie Guenther finished 16th with a career-best mark of 176-05 (53.78m), and sophomore Lyndsey Thorpe was 18th (175-03, 53.43m). Freshman Nicolle Murphy made her collegiate debut in the hammer throw with a mark of 132-03 (40.31m) as well.
Stanford also led Minnesota in the discus with a toss of 156-06 (47.71m) for 13th place. Guenther was close behind in 17th (151-01, 46.06m), and Megan Petermann finished 30th (142-09, 43.51m).
The Triton Invitational concludes on Saturday with the rest of the field, jumping, and track events. Throwing events kick off the day at 12 p.m. CT with the men's hammer (invitational). The women's 4x100-meter relay is the first event on the track at 1 p.m. CT Saturday. The final event is the men's 5000-meter run, which has an approximate start time of 8:25 p.m. CT.
