On the first day of th e104th annual Drake Relays, the University of Minnesota women's track and field team had their distance runners in competition for the Ditance Carnival. the Golden Gophers' 4x1600-meter relay took second to open the night.
Maggie Bollig, Becca Dyson, Ashlie Decker and Laura Docherty came close to grabbing the team's fourth 4x1600-meter relay title in five season, but Iowa State edged out the Gophers by seven seconds. The quartet ran a time of 19:23.25 to receive second in the unique relay race.
In the 10,000-meter run, freshman Rebecca Rethwisch ran a 37:19.53 in her first collegiate race at that distance. Junior Stephanie Solfelt posted a personal-best time of 37:45.79, nearly a minute and a half faster than her previous best which was set last season.
The 5,000-meter run capped off the night for the Maroon & Gold as freshman Liz Berkholtz led the Gopher squad with a time of 16:51.84. Juniors Kelli Budd and Missa Varpness came in on Berkholtz's heels to finish with times of 16:52.76 and 16:59.24, respectively. Budd's time was a personal-best by 26 seconds. Kaila Urick and Rachel Drake rounded out the five Gophers running.
Minnesota is back in action at Drake tomorrow morning at 10:58 a.m. with the prelims for the 4x100-meter relay.
