ATHENS, Ga. – Four Gopher throwers and three Gopher heptathletes competed Friday as Minnesota kicked off competition at the Spec Towns Invite and Bulldog Heptathlon hosted by the University of Georgia this weekend.
The Spec Towns Invite began with men's and women's triple jump, men's and women's hammer throw and women's shot put on Friday.
Junior Devin Stanford took second in the hammer throw with a career-best mark of 196-07 (59.92m). Her throw moves her from seventh to third in the Gopher all-time ranks.
Sophomore Becci Osterdyk took second in the shot put with a throw of 45-05.25 (13.85m) as well.
The Spec Towns Invite continues Saturday, beginning with the women's javelin at 9:30 a.m. CT. Running events get underway with the women's 5,000-meter run at 12:10 p.m. CT.
Three Gophers are competing in the Bulldog Heptathlon this weekend; the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200-meter dash were contested on Friday. Through four events, sophomore Jess Herauf leads Minnesota in seventh place with 3,082 points.
Herauf took second in the shot put at 41-04.25 (12.60m) and fifth in high jump at 5-03.75 (1.62m). She also clocked a 15.08 in the 100m hurdles and a 26.07 in the 200m.
Redshirt freshman Audra Winter is in 11th with 2,934 points through four events. Her highest place so far is taking fifth in the 200m in 25.07. Winter also recorded marks of 15.13 in the 100m hurdles, 5-00.25 (1.53m) in the high jump, and 35-00.50(10.68m) in the shot put.
Sophomore Amanda Beckman is 12th with 2,885 points, including placing seventh in the shot put at 37-00.25 (11.28m). She finished ninth in the 100m hurdles (15.73) and tied for ninth in the high jump (5-01.25, 1.56m). Beckman recorded a 25.58 in the 200m as well.
Fellow sophomore Alex Beckman started off the heptathlon in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.85 but did not continue the competition.
The heptathlon wraps up with the long jump, javelin and 800-meter run on Saturday.
