University of Minnesota sophomore Devin Stanford set a personal best mark in the hammer throw at the Arkansas Sping Invitational on Friday night. The sophomore claimed third place in the event with a hurl of 55.36m/181-7.
Stanford notched her personal best toss with her second throw in the second flight and advanced to the finals in third place. The Milwaukee, Wis. native attempted to climb the ranks with three additional throws in the finals, but she couldn't better her mark despite her final toss going 55.25m/181-3.
The sophomore now ranks seventh on Minnesota's all-time list with her third place hurl. Her previous best was 54.65m/179-3, which was set two weeks ago in Las Vegas, Nev. for a second place finish.
Senior Jeri Johnson-Chambers was the only other Gopher competing on Friday night with Stanford, and she took ninth in the hammer.
The rest of the Maroon & Gold will compete tomorrow at the Arkansas Spring Invitational beginning with the long jump at noon and the steeplechase at 12:30 p.m. A quartet of Gopher distance runners are also competing at the Stanford Invitational tomorrow.
