Gophers Have Strong Outing After Day 1 of Aztec Invite

The Minnesota women’s track and field team had a very solid day on the first day of the Aztec Invitational, in San Diego, Calif. Minnesota will close out the weekend tomorrow in California.

Todea-Kay Willis had a very strong outing in her first of the 2012 season. The junior won the long jump with a leap of 19-3 ¼ (5.87m).

The Gophers also had a first place finish from DeAnne Hahn in the hammer throw. The senior nearly hit the school record with a throw of 197-0 (60.04m). She currently has the second best throw in Minnesota history. Amy Kubat took 10th with a mark of 161-05 (49.21m).

Minnesota’s 4x100 meter relay had no problem at all. The Gophers took fist and second at the Aztec Invite. Kay Willis, Nyoka Giles, Chimerem Okoroji and Kylie Peterson took first with a time of 46.03. The “B” group of Sasha Davis, Kelly Stalpes, Megan Geyen and Jessica Waldvogel were right behind them in 46.30.

Freshman Christina DeLakis picked up her first career title in the outdoor season. DeLakis won the shot put with a throw of 48-5 ¼ (14.76m). The freshman also took fifth in the hammer with a toss of 155-08 (47.45m).

Devon Stanford took third in the hammer with a mark of 159-04 (48.56m)

Melissa Flucke finished fourth overall in the high jump in her first outdoor event of the season. The sophomore cleared 5-3 (1.60m)


 

 

The Gophers also had participations in the steeplechase today. Katie Moraczewski finished second overall with a time of 10:34.83. Teammate Molly Kayfes was fourth at 10:58.12 and Paige Orcutt was seventh at 11:13.08.
