Feb. 8, 2013
Through two days of the Iowa State Classic, the Golden Gophers have competed in the pentathlon, several non-seeded events and the 60-meter preliminary heats. The seeded events will take place Saturday.
All six Minnesota runners in the non-seeded 3,000-meter race achieved personal record times. Liz Berkholtz won in 9:45.82, leading most of the way. Missa Varpness (9:48.14) and Kelli Budd (9:53.45) came in third and fourth, while Kaila Urick (9:54.51) finished seventh. Kate Bucknam and Hannah Trasser also recorded PRs.
In the weight throw, Jeri Johnson-Chambers tied her personal record and Minnesota’s sixth-best all-time mark with a toss of 57-7 3/4 (17.57m). She finished third in the event.
Alex Beckman and Amanda Beckman started the competition for the Gophers on Thursday with the pentathlon, where they finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Alex’s day was highlighted by a second-place finish and PR in the shot put.
“Some of our young people did really good things today,” director of track and field/cross country Matt Bingle said. “The 3K was good, and it was good to see Liz Berkholtz have a breakthrough as a freshman. Kylie and TK looked good in the 60 and I’m looking forward to seeing them run tomorrow.”
Minnesota’s Saturday will begin with the seeded 3,000 meters at 11:15 a.m.
