ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 11 Golden Gophers won the 4x400m relay, high jump, and weight throw on day two of the Power Five Invite on Saturday after Minnesota also took home titles in the 600m and 5,000m on day one of the meet hosted by the University of Michigan.
Minnesota's 4x400m relay team of Val Larson, Emerald Egwim, Rachel Schow, and Titania Markland won in 3:36.36, good for second in Gophers' history. The quartet now ranks third in the Big Ten Conference and 13th in the NCAA this season.
Leading the way in the field events for the Gophers were Agnes Esser, who won weight throw with a mark of 20.71m (67-11.50) to lead five Gophers among the top eight finishers, and Heta Tuuri, who cleared a season-best 1.79m (5-10.50) to win high jump. Taylor Wiebke cleared 1.74m (5-08.50) for third place in high jump as well.
Behind Esser in the weight throw, Kaitlyn Long (20.41m, 66-11.50) placed third and Nayoka Clunis (20.14m, 66-01.00) finished fifth. Temi Ogunrinde (19.92m, 65-04.25) and Nina Horvath (19.44m, 63-09.50) were seventh and eighth, respectively.
The Gophers also took three of the top eight place in the shot put led by Kiley Sabin's third-place throw of 16.24m (53-03.50). Clunis took fifth with a throw of 16.13m (52-11.00), and Shay Nielsen was eighth (14.65m, 48-00.75).
Minnesota also saw strong performances on the track in the 400m, 60m hurdles, and mile on day two of meet.
Markland ran an indoor career-best 53.69 seconds to finish as runner-up in the 400m dash and improve on her second-ranked time in program history. Egwim took third in 53.72 seconds, and Larson also ran an indoor PR of 55.47 seconds for 10th place.
In the 60m hurdles, Emma Spagnola ran a season-best 8.29 seconds to finish as runner-up while Schow finished sixth in 8.64 seconds.
Other top performances in the field events for the Maroon & Gold saw Karlie Place clear 4.02m (13-02.25) for sixth place in pole vault and Lorean Murray finish fifth in triple jump (12.01m, 39-05.00) and ninth in long jump (5.59m, 18-04.25).
Larson (600m) and Megan Hasz (5,000m) led the Gophers with event titles on day one of the meet on Friday. The Gophers' distance medley relay team of Bethany Hasz, Egwim, Markland, and Strandemo also finished fourth with the second-fastest time in program history at 11:07.53. Hannah Arason scored a career-best 3,851 points to finish fourth in the pentathlon as well.
Next weekend, Minnesota will split the squad for three meets. The sprints, jumps, pole vault, and relays are set to compete at the Music City Classic in Nashville, Tenn., while the distance and throws groups compete at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa. A group will also compete locally at the UST Showcase hosted by the University of St. Thomas.
