The women's tennis team completed its fall schedule today when they participated in the final round of the seventh-annual Kitty Harrison Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C. The event, which began on Friday, featured 12 programs from across the country.
Joining the Gophers in the event were host North Carolina, Texas A&M, Duke, Virginia, Pepperdine, Maryland, Georgia Tech, Princeton, Vanderbilt, North Carolina-Greensboro and William & Mary.
Each team played four rounds of singles and four rounds of doubles. On Friday, Minnesota played singles and doubles matches against Virginia and singles matches against Maryland. On Saturday, the Gophers played doubles against North Carolina-Greensboro and William & Mary and singles versus Duke.
Minnesota finished the event with six singles matches against Princeton and three doubles matches against Georgia Tech on Sunday.
The doubles teams of Tomljanovic/Fraser from Virginia and Lilley/Krupina from Georgia Tech were co-champs of the event. Minnesota's top doubles pairing of Alessandra Ferrazzi and Alexa Palen faced both squads during the last three days. Ferrazzi and Palen fell 9-7 to the 29th-ranked Georgia Tech duo on Sunday and 8-2 to the 28th-ranked pairing from Virginia on Friday.
Nazari Urbina of Texas A&M took first place in singles and was followed by Emily Fraser (Virginia), Ellah Nze (Duke) and Shinann Featherston (North Carolina). Gopher freshman Natallia Pintusava faced Duke's 29th-ranked Nze on Saturday and lost 2-6, 6-0, 1-0. Ferrazzi faced Virginia's Fraser on Friday and was defeated 6-0, 6-1.
The Gophers do not compete again until Jan. 21, 2011, when they begin their dual match season in Huntington, W.Va., against Marshall. They play Kentucky the following day also at Marshall. Minnesota's first home match is Feb. 11 versus Oklahoma at the Baseline Tennis Center.
