Valerie Vladea moved into the third round. Amy Thomas, Angela Buergis and Michaela Havelkova also saw action but were defeated in their respective matches.
Vladea fought off Purdue's Swanna Zucarrini in the first round 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. She then faced Tiffany Eklov of Illinois and swiftly handed her a 6-1, 6-2 loss. That places Vladea, the tournament's eighth seed, in the third round of competition where she will go up against Kavitha Tipernini from Michigan at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
In other action, senior Amy Thomas advanced to the second round by defeating Jackie Lescovar of Ohio State 6-1, 2-6, 7-6. But, she was then eliminated with a 3-6, 1-6 loss to, the tournament's No. 1 seed, Marine Piriou of Northwestern. Fellow senior Michaela Havelkova lost to Leanne Rutherford of Michigan 6-7, 7-5, 4-6 and Illinois State's Liina Suurvanik defeated junior Angela Buergis 5-7, 1-6 in the first round of play.
