University of Minnesota women's tennis players Ida Malmberg and Ashley Schellhas fell in the round of 16 today in singles play at the 2006 ITA Midwest Region Championships in East Lansing, Mich. Malmberg and Schellhas were the lone Golden Gophers competing in the fall season-ending tournament.
Malmberg fell victim to Michigan's Chisako Sugiyama in a 6-0, 6-1 match. With her loss, Malmberg finished the ITA Regional with a 2-1 singles record to move her fall record to 10-4. Schellhas, meanwhile, lost a 6-2, 6-3 match to 75th-ranked Randi Schuler of Purdue to finish the fall season with a 3-2 mark.
The Golden Gophers return to competition on Saturday-Sunday, Jan. 27-28 as hosts of the Minnesota Court Classic. The Maroon and Gold will welcome Wake Forest, South Alabama and Western Michigan to the Baseline Tennis Center for the dual season-opening tournament.
