Minnesota swept through the opening round of the main singles draw at the 2007 ITA Midwest Regional Championship, but couldn’t keep it going in the Round of 32 as all three Gophers were eliminated from the tournament Saturday at Michigan’s Varsity Tennis Center.
Freshman Alessandra Ferrazzi defeated Sandra Sasidhara of Eastern Illinois 6-2, 6-2, junior Karina Chiarelli knocked off Anastasia Dracheva of Miami (Ohio) 6-0, 6-2 and sophomore Tijana Koprivica got past Kristina Minor of Illinois 7-5, 6-4 in the first round.
But in the second round Northwestern’s Georgia Rose, the tournament’s No. 1 seed, defeated Ferrazzi 6-1, 6-4 and Notre Dame’s Cosmina Ciobanu 6-2, 6-2 knocked off Chiarelli as both Gophers fell in straight sets. Koprivica also dropped a straight sets match, falling to Michigan’s Tania Mahtani 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles, Chiarelli and Ferrazzi’s run to the quarterfinals came to an end as the Michigan tandem of Sugiyama and Whitney Taney dealt the Gopher duo an 8-1 loss.
