The University of Minnesota women's tennis team finished the first day of the three-day tournament at the Rice Tennis Classic in Houston, Texas. Three Gophers won the first round and will play in the quarterfinals. In Flight A action, Valerie Vladea won 6-1, 6-4 over Johanna Furdyna of Texas-El Paso. Vladea plays again tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. In Flight B competition, sophomore Brandi Watts won by default over University of Texas-El Paso's Kendall Exelby. Watts will face Megan Ferreira of the University of Arkansas tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. Freshman Kelly Perry received a bye in the first round of Flight B, but was defeated by Yasmin Fisher of Rice, who also received a bye, 6-4, 6-4. Senior Andrea Rose won 6-0, 6-0 over Texas-Pan American's Jessica Brown in Flight C competition. Rose will play again tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. against Danielle Lee of Texas A & M. In doubles action, Vladea and junior Michaela Havelkova won two matches today. The duo won the first match defeating Geme/McCoy (Arkansas State) 8-3, while the second win came against def. Ferreira/Lopez (Arkansas), 8-2. Frosh Cici Anderson and Perry defeated Pena/Brown of Texas Pan-American 8-1. The Gophers will finish the Rice Tennis Classic on Sunday. Next action for the women's tennis team will be the ITA Regional Qualifier Oct. 27-30.
