Gophers Finish First Day in Evanston
Oct. 4, 2013
The Minnesota women’s tennis team finished up play at Northwestern’s Wildcat Invitational in Evanston, Ill. Friday night. The Gophers went 10-10 in singles play, including a 6-4 record in the first round, and finished 2-3 in doubles competition.
In the tournament’s top flight, Natallia Pintusava avenged a loss from two weeks prior at the Gopher Invitational by taking down Wisconsin’s Lauren Chypyha with a straight set win and Tereza Brichacova rallied to beat Kentucky’s Aldila Sutjiadi to advance to the second round, but both players lost their second match.
Jessika Mozia shook off a 6-3 first-set loss to Sydney Rider to win 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 and all three Minnesota players in the Blue Flight, Kendall Heitzner, Yuliana Umanets, and Kelsey Frechette, moved on to Round 2. Heitzner and Umanets reached the semifinal round and were the only Gophers to go 2-0 on the day.
Maja Vujic and Julia Courter each lost her first match of the day, but recovered with consolation draw wins while Aria Lambert and Paula Rincon Otero both went 0-2. Players for host Northwestern handed the Gophers half of their singles losses on the day.
Only one round of doubles play was completed on Day 1 and two of the five Minnesota duos advanced to the next round in the winner’s draw. Brichacova and Rincon-Otero and Mozia and Vujic both beat opponents from Oklahoma.
Play at the Wildcat resumes Saturday and wraps up Sunday. Following this weekend, the next action Minnesota will see will be at the ITA Central Region Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Oct. 17-21.
