Angela Buergis and Nischela Reddy won their opening-round match today at the 2003 ITA Women's All-American Pre-Qualifiers in Los Angeles, Calif. With two more wins in the event, the Golden Gophers would qualify for the ITA All-American Qualifiers on Oct. 7-8.
Buergis and Reddy defeated Pepperdine's Eva Dickes and Karin Schlapbach, 8-6, and will face Shilpa Joshi and Gina Black of UCLA on Sunday at 2 p.m., Central time. Buergis and Reddy are the lone Golden Gophers competing this weekend.
The Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, the Nov. 6-9 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, and the year-end NCAA Championships are college tennis' three national championship events during the season.
The Oct. 9-12 main draw is preceded by two sets of qualifying tournaments. The 64-player (32 doubles) prequalifying tournament is Oct. 4-5, and four players and doubles teams will advance from there to the Oct. 7-8 64-player qualifying tournament (where eight players and four doubles teams will advance to the main draw).
