The Minnesota women’s tennis team will resume its fall schedule this weekend when it travels south to Evanston, Ill. to compete in a familiar fall tournament, Northwestern’s Wildcat Invitational. This is the eighth straight season the Gophers have traveled to Northwestern for a fall tournament and eight off 11 players in the Minnesota roster have competed there in the fall before.
Competition at the tournament begins Friday and will go through Sunday. The Gophers and host Wildcats will be joined by nine other schools: Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia, Princeton, North Carolina State, DePaul and Illinois-Chicago. There will be seven singles draws and two doubles draws.
Representing Minnesota in the top flight, the Purple Flight, will be senior Natallia Pintusava and junior Tereza Brichacova. Pintusava will start off facing Wisconsin’s Lauren Chypyha, who beat her in a supertiebreaker in the fifth-place match in the top flight at the Gopher Invitational two weeks ago. Brichacova will take on Kentucky freshman Aldila Sutjiadi.
Pintusava was the only Minnesota player in action last week as she competed in pre-qualifying draw at the ITA All-American Championships, falling to Baylor’s Jordaan Sanford, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2.
In the Red Flight, junior Julia Courter will play Wildcat Maddie Lipp and Jessika Mozia will face UW freshman Sydney Rider. Paula Rincon Otero is the lone Gopher in the Black Flight and will open the tournament against DePaul’s Jarret Fisher. Aria Lambert will face Liza Fieldsend of North Carolina State in the White Bracket.
Freshman Maja Vujic will play Kentucky junior Stephanie Fox in her Green Flight opener while teammates Yuliana Umanets, Kendall Heitzner, and Kelsey Frechette will all play in the Blue Flight. The Blue Flight will feature 14 players while every other flight will include eight players.
Vujic, Heitzner, and Frechette will each be playing in her first Wildcat Invitational.
Four doubles tandems will be in action for Minnesota to start the tournament. Pintusava and Courter, who placed third at the Gopher Invitational’s top flight will join the back draw champions from that flight, Brichacova and Rincon Otero in the Yellow Flight. Lambert and Frechette and Heitzner and Umanets will compete in the Brown Flight.
Following this weekend, the Gophers will next play at the ITA Central Region Championships in Tulsa, Okla. Oct. 17-21.
