Chiarelli Captures Individual Title at Drake Invitational

Karina Chiarelli captured the singles championship in the top flight at Sunday’s Drake Invitational in Des Moines, Iowa to lead the Minnesota women’s tennis team in its weekend competition.

Chiarelli claimed a third-set 10-point tiebreaker over Marie-Christine Chartier of Iowa State for a 6-4, 5-7, 10-3 victory in the title match. Chiarelli reached the finals with an opening-round win over Petra Keilova of Central Arkansas 6-0, 6-0, a second-round win over Sampada Kanade of Northern Iowa 7-5, 7-6 (4) and a semifinal victory over Morgan Rainey of Drake 7-6 (5), 7-5.

Alessandra Ferrazzi also had a successful weekend at the Cal Nike Women’s Invitational in Berkley, Calif. with a 3-1 record. Ferrazzi rallied to defeat the nation’s 64th-ranked player, Hannah Grady of Long Beach State, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. She also beat Laila Abdala of Arizona State 6-2, 6-4 before a semifinal loss to the nation’s seventh-ranked player, Marina Cossou of California, 6-1, 6-0. Ferrazzi closed with a consolation win over Anna Chikhikvishvili of St. Mary's 6-2, 7-6.

Tijana Koprivica also played in California and bounced back with a pair of wins after an opening round loss to Natasha Marks of Arizona 6-3, 6-4. Koprivica beat Marah Calvo of St. Mary’s 1-6, 6-1, 10-7 and then topped Milica Zivanovic of Sacramento State 6-1, 6-1. She lost in the consolation semifinals to Abigail Oliver of Fresno State 3-6, 6-0, 10-8. 

Ferrazzi and Koprivica lost in their opening doubles match to Ali VanHorne and Abdala of Arizona State 8-3, but came back to claim the consolation title. The pair posted victories over Luba Schifris and Zivanovic of Sacramento State 8-3 and Jolanta Twarowska and Sasha Fisher of Pacific 8-4 before beating Marks and Sarah Landsman of Arizona 8-2.

Also at the Drake Invitational, Magdalena Wiecha fell in the finals of the consolation bracket in the top flight with a 6-7 (8), 6-3, 10-6 setback to Northern Iowa’s Phoebe Walker. Wiecha lost her opening match to Northern Iowa’s Jessica Kunzelmann 4-6, 6-3, 10-8, but bounced back with wins over Shadi Soleymani of South Dakota 6-2, 6-1 and Rebecca Miller of Central Arkansas 7-5, 6-1.

Jackie Sperling also played in the top flight and won her first match over Lindsey Erickson of Creighton 6-2, 6-3 before suffering a second-round loss to Rainey 7-6 (6), 6-0.

Jackie Claypool and Liz Tusler each won their first match in the “C” singles flight, but both lost in the second round. Claypool beat Jordan Short of Central Arkansas 6-2, 6-3 before falling to Sarah Cadwallader of Creighton 6-1, 6-3. Tusler defeated Ashley Waltman of South Dakota 6-3, 6-1 and lost to Lindsay Short of Central Arkansas 6-4, 6-1. In the “B” singles flight, Peta Forsyth lost to Mary Pat McMullan of Creighton 7-5, 7-6 (4) in the first round.

In doubles, Sperling teamed with Wiecha and Chiarelli and Forsyth combined to both reach the semifinals of the “A” flight. Sperling and Wiecha advanced to the semifinals with wins over Alex Rios and Keilova of Central Arkansas 8-3 and over Sarah and Leesa Cadwallader of Creighton 8-6 before losing to Gabby Demos and Amanda Aragon of Drake 8-4. Chiarelli and Forsyth opened with wins over Kari Sloboth and Earlynn Lauer of Drake 8-1 and Kanada and Taynara Moraes of Northern Iowa 8-3 before a loss to Veronika Leszayova and Sarah Plowman of Drake 8-6.

Claypool and Tusler competed in the “B” doubles flight and opened with an 8-3 win over Amanda Davis and Chelsea Loprinzi of Iowa State prior to a second-round loss to Lauren Mastro and Kelsey Schmidt of Creighton 8-2.
