Sophomore Jackie Sperling advanced to the Flight C final and junior Karina Chiarelli and freshman Alessandra Ferrazzi moved on to the Flight A doubles championship Saturday at the UNM Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.

Sperling’s 6-2, 6-4 win over Kaja Smole of Denver was one of just two singles victories on the day for the Gophers, who went 2-5 overall on Saturday.

Ferrazzi picked up the other Minnesota win, cruising past Jennifer Ryba of New Mexico 6-1, 6-1 to earn a spot in the Flight A consolation bracket final. She also teamed with Chiarelli for a hard-fought 9-8 win over Tori Almagno and Gleisy Torres-Torres of Colorado in the Flight A doubles semifinals.

It was one of three doubles wins for the Gophers Saturday. Senior Danielle Mousseau and junior Mariana Spilca bounced back from an opening-round setback in Flight B on Friday to capture an 8-6 victory over Aimee Oki and Regan Newman of Northern Arizona, while Sperling and sophomore Mikayla Rogers remained undefeated in Flight C with an 8-4 win over duo of Paji Porter from NAU’s and Smole of Denver.

Play at the UNM Fall Invitational will conclude on Sunday afternoon.
