GOPHERS ADVANCE IN THE ST. MARY'S HEALTH SYSTEM WOMEN'S TENNIS CLASSIC

Knoxville, Tenn.-The University of Minnesota women's tennis team earned six singles victories today. Six Gophers will play on Sunday for the consolation titles in each of their flights. Valerie Vladea (Kitchener, Ontario/Burlington Central) defeated Gretchen Haynor of Purdue 7-5, 0- 6, 6-4. Vladea will face North Carolina State's Jackie Lescovar for the Flight One singles consolation title.

Amy Thomas (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) won her match in Flight Two singles over Caroline Bentley of Furman. Thomas won in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 and moves into the consolation match against Jaime Wong of Georgia Tech.

The third Gopher to advance to the consolation match is Michaela Havelkova (Liberec, Czech Republic/Gymnazium F.X. Saldy). Havelkova won her Flight Three singles match over Furman's Mary Kovarik by a score of 7-5, 4-6, 6-3. She takes on Catherine Gunn of Georgia Tech.

Newcomer Kelly Perry (San Diego, Calif./Uni) lost the first set of her Flight Five singles but went on to win the next two to defeat Yumi Ueda from Mississippi State 6-7 (1), 6-1, 6-2. Perry will face Georgia Tech's Kristen Roberson for the consolation title also.

Andrea Rose (North Vancouver, British Columbia/Handsworth) won her match in straight sets over Mississippi State's Elaine Fagan. Rose competed in Flight Six singles and faces Shawna Zuccarini of Purdue for consolation.

Flight Seven singles had Jen Howard (Thornhill, Ontario/Thornlea) paired up against Purdue's Shellie Cochran. Howard defeated Cochran 6- 4, 6-2 and advances to the consolation title to take on Myrna Bowono of N.C. State.

Brandi Watts (Monument, Colo./Lewis-Palmer) will play for third place tomorrow in Flight Four singles. Cici Anderson (Stillwater, Minn.) will play for seventh in Flight Eight singles.

On the doubles side, Thomas/Watts took fifth place in Flight Two doubles. They won 8-4 over Purdue's Bugarello/Zuccarini. Flight One doubles had Vladea/Havelkova paired against Leskovar/Gildemeister of N.C. State. The Gophers captured seventh place after winning their match 8-4. Howard/Anderson also earned seventh place after defeating N.C.State's Parker/Craven 8-3 in Flight Four doubles.

Singles flight championships will take place tomorrow.

Doubles: Flight One: Vladea/Havelkova, Gophers, def. Leskovar/Gildemeister, N.C. State, 8-4. Flight Two: Thomas/Watts, Gophers, def. Bugarello/Zuccarini, Purdue, 8-4. Flight Three: Fick/Walgenbach, Purdue, def. Perry/Rose, Gophers, 9-8 (5). Flight Four: Howard/Anderson, Gophers, def. Parker/Craven, N.C. State, 8-3.
