Gopher Invitational Brackets (Updated)

Four University of Minnesota women's tennis players earned spots in singles flight championship matches Sunday in the Gopher Invitational at the Baseline Tennis Center. In total, the Gophers went 5-5 in doubles and 6-4 and singles Saturday, moving to 9-6 in doubles and 22-8 in singles overall in the tournament.

In the "M" singles flight, Minnesota's Tereza Brichacova downed Northern Iowa's Erica Medin 7-5, 6-1 and will play Iowa State's Ksenia Pronina in Sunday's final. Natallia Pintusava defeated Wisconsin's Sydney Rider in straight sets to advance to the fifth-place game in the same flight.

The "U" Flight guarantees a Minnesota champion--Aria Lambert edged teammate Paula Rincon Otero and Jessika Mozia beat out Iowa State's Samantha Budai in a super tiebreaker to reach the final. Lambert and Mozia will play for the title, while, Rincon Otero will play for third against Budai. Julia Courter will play for seventh in the same bracket.

Maja Vujic, Minnesota's lone freshman this season, has made a great first impression in singles play in the Gold Flight. The Niagara Falls, Ont. native grinded out a 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (5) win over Drake's Mariel Ante to earn a spot in the flight's final.

Fellow newcomer Kendall Heitzner, a transfer from Colorado State, beat new teammate Yuliana Umanets in the fifth-places semifinal in the Gold Flight.

In the Maroon Flight, Kelsey Frechette dropped her semifinal match to South Dakota State's Iasmin Rosa.

In doubles play, Pintusava and Courter reached the semifinal of the Gold Flight by beating Rider and Lauren Chyphya of Wisconsin, but lost in the next round to Iowa's Ruth Seaborne and Morven McCulloch, the 28th-ranked double duo in the country.

In the Gold Flight consolation draw, Brichacova and Rincon Otero won both of their Saturday matches to move on to the ninth-place match.

Like Pintusava and Courter, Mozia and Heitzner moved on to the semifinal of their flight, the Maroon Flight, but fell in the semifinal round. After both teams lost in the quarterfinal round, Lambert and Frechette faced Vujic and Umanets in the fifth-place bracket and took an 8-5 victory.

Play Sunday at the Gopher Invitational will begin at 9 a.m. with the final round of doubles. The last round of singles will begin after the conclusion of doubles play.
