triThe University of Minnesota Women's Tennis Team completed the first day at the William & Mary Invitational on Friday. The tournament which runs through Sunday features players from 16 teams.

A trio of Golden Gophers advanced into the second round. No. 80 Valeria Vladea defeated Vanessa Bagnato of Richmond, 6-1, 6-1. She was then defeated by the tournament's top seed, 11th-ranked Nataly Cahana of Old Dominion, 2-6, 1-6. N ischela Reddy got past Igna deVilliers of Miami, 6-0, 6-1, before dropping her second-round match against Katie Karhohs from Richmond, 4-6, 2-6. K andis Batiste defeated Melissa Reed of William & Mary, 6-0, 7-5, but fell to Holly Asel from Marshall, 6-4, 1-6, 4-6.

Four players rebounded from opening round defeats to win their consolation matches. A ngela Buergis defeated Staci Stevens from Miami, 6-3, 6-3. A my Thomas ousted Danielle Schwartz from Wake Forest, 6-1, 6-1 and M ichaela Havelkova defeated Lindsay Cox of Richmond, 6-4, 6-4. B randi Watts got past Kelli Partlow of William & Mary, 6-4, 7-6 (2). CiCi Anderson and J eannette Cluskey were defeated in both of their matches.

In the doubles portion of the tournament, Buergis and Cluskey were sent into the consolation bracket by No. 36 Boomershine and Fuchs of William & Mary, 4-8. Reddy and Watts fell to Kinard and Kramer from Virginia Tech, 5-8. Anderson and Batiste received a bye and advanced to the second round.
