JuniThe University of Minnesota women's tennis team wrapped up its first week of play of the 2005-06 season today in the final day of competition at the 2005 Bronco Invitational in Kalamazoo, Mich. Junior Ida Malmberg (Kristianstad, Sweden) fell in the final of the Flight A Singles draw, while the remainder of the Golden Gophers went 1-4 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles matches.
In the Flight A Singles draw, Malmberg went 3-1 in the tournament, falling 7-6, 6-2 to Indiana's Alba Berdala in the title match. The lone other Golden Gopher to pick up a singles win on the day was sophomore Marina Bugaenco's 6-2, 6-0 victory over Emma Retter of Ball State. Freshman Mariana Spilca finished her first week as a Golden Gopher with a 1-3 record after a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Priyanka Parekh of Western Michigan. Minnesota went 0-3 in the Flight B Singles draw with Jenna Tellefsen going 0-2 and Shelby Rohrer falling once.
In doubles play, the Maroon and Gold went 2-1 in three matches against Ball State. Minnesota's top duo of Malmberg and Nischela Reddy downed Haly Calderwood/Jessica Thompson, 8-4, and Bugaenco and Spilca edged Jennifer Pollack/Emma Retter, 9-8 (3. UM's lone loss was an 8-2 defeat by Katie Owens/Stephanie Farrar over Tellefsen and Rohrer.
The Golden Gophers next heads to the ITA All-American Championships in Los Angeles, Calif., from Oct. 1-9. Reddy will compete in the qualifying singles draw (Oct. 4-5), while the doubles team of Reddy and Malmberg will take part in the pre-qualifying event (Oct. 1-2).
