The University of Minnesota women's tennis team advanced three singles players and two doubles teams into finals of their respective flights today at the Second Annual Gopher Invitational. The season-opening Gopher Invite, held at the Baseline Tennis Center, concludes Sunday morning. Admission is free.
For the day, Golden Gopher singles players went 10-8, while Minnesota doubles teams went 3-1. The 2004 Gopher Invitational includes three singles flights (named Timberwolves, Vikings and Twins) and two doubles flights (named Wild and Lynx).
In the Timberwolves Flight, junior Nischela Reddy advanced to the championship match with two wins. Reddy downed Lauren Hom of Gustavus Adolphus, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, before walloping Jill Palen of Iowa State, 6-2, 6-1. I da Malmberg won her quarterfinal match, but fell in the semifinals to Drake's Zorana Stefanovic, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. L indsay Risebrough lost in the quarterfinals, but rebounded to post a 6-2, 7-5 triumph over Hom in the consoaltion bracket.
In the Vikings Flight, freshman J ane Anderson cruised into the finals with two wins. First, she dispatched Charlotte Ljungkrantz of Iowa State, 6-3, 6-1, before moving to the finals when fellow freshman Golden Gopgher M arina Bugaenco retired early in the first set of the semifinals. Freshman D anielle Mousseau lost her quarterfinal match, 6-1, 6-0 to ISU's Chrissy Derouin.
In the Twins Singles Flight, sophomore M egan Steiger moved into the title match with two three-set victories. She opened up the season with a 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 win over Amy Meissner of Wisconsin-Green Bay, before out-lasting Elissa Bashleben of Gustavus, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Sophomore teammates S helby Rohrer and J enna Tellefsen lost their quarterfinal matches, but Tellefsen rebounded to win a three-set match in the consolation bracket.
In the Wild Doubles Flight, Reddy and Risebrough advanced to the finals with ease, routing Jaime Gaard and Jenny White of Gustavus, 8-2. Malmberg and Mousseau lost in their semifinal match, falling to Stefanovic and Allison Wilkie of Drake, 8-3.
In the Lynx Doubles Flight, Anderson and Bugaenco moved into the finals with a dominating 8-1 win over Gustavus' Jenny Arnfelt and Alex Burleigh.
The six-team singles and doubles tournament features six teams from the five-state area - Drake, Gustavus Adolphus, Iowa State, Minnesota, South Dakota State and Wisconsin-Green Bay.
Final matches in doubles will begins at 9 a.m., on Sunday, while final singles matches begin at 10:30 a.m. Final results will be updated on gophersports.com following completion of all matches.
