The University of Minnesota women's tennis team wrapped up day one of the Second Annual Gopher Invitational with strong showings in both singles and doubles action. The season-opening Gopher Invite, held at the Baseline Tennis Center, continues through Sunday. Admission is free.

For the day, Golden Gopher singles players went 3-0, while Minnesota doubles teams went 3-1. The 2004 Gopher Invitational includes three singles flights (named Timberwolves, Vikings and Twins) and two doubles flights (named Wild and Lynx). In the Timberwolves Flight, junior Nischela Reddy overwhelmed Iowa State's Beth Chermel, 6-1, 6-1. In the Vikings Flight, freshman Jane Anderson opened her career in the Maroon and Gold with a 6 -1, 6-1 triumph over Jenny Tan of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Fellow freshman Marina Bugaenco dispatched Hanna Frericks of Gustavus Adolphus, 6-4, 6-2, in her first match as a Golden Gopher.

In the Wild Doubles Flight, Nischela Reddy and Lindsay Risebrough downed Jaime Gaard and Jenny White, 8-4, while Ida Malmberg and freshman Danielle Mousseau defeated Amber Murdoch and Jenny Tan of UWGB, 8-2.

In the Lynx Doubles Flight, Anderson and Bugaenco teamed to down Kate Wylie and Jennifer Sondreal, 8-3, to advance to the semifinals. Shelby Rohrer and Jenna Tellefsen fell in the first round, 8-2, to Heather Harding and Meg Gregory of UWGB.

The six-team singles and doubles tournament which runs from Friday-Sunday, Sept. 17-19, features six teams from the five-state area - Drake, Gustavus Adolphus, Iowa State, Minnesota, South Dakota State and Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Play continues at 9 a.m., on Saturday and continues until Sunday afternoon. Complete results will be updated on gophersports.com following each day of competition.
