Alessandra Ferrazzi captured third place in the top singles flight and teamed with Tijana Koprivica for third place in the top doubles flight to lead the University of Minnesota women's tennis team on the final day of the Gopher Invitational on Sunday at the Baseline Tennis Center.
Ferrazzi defeated Mikayla Hedberg of LSU 7-6, 6-3 for her singles victory after joining Koprivica for a 9-7 win over Hannah Robinson and Whitney Wolf of LSU in the doubles competition. Koprivica won twice in singles on Sunday, including a 6-1, 6-4 win over Wolf. She also took a 3-0 lead in a match against Erin Karonis of Iowa State before Karonis retired with an injury.
Minnesota's doubles team of Jackie Sperling and Magdalena Wiecha reached the title match of the top doubles flight, but lost to 11th-ranked Megan Falcon and Hedberg of LSU. Falcon and Hedberg led 5-2 before Wiecha was forced to retire with an injury. Sperling and Wiecha were also scheduled to play each other in a doubles consolation match, but with Wiecha unable to play, Sperling defeated Samantha Frank of Gustavus Adolphus 6-2, 6-0.
Peta Forsyth picked up two fourth place finishes on Sunday for the Gophers. She lost her third place match in singles to Sarah Cassman of Air Force 2-6, 7-5, (10-3) and also lost a doubles match with Liz Tusler by an 8-3 score to Ashley Finnegan and Abby Buxton of Nebraska. Tusler lost a consolation match in singles to Bryna Nasenbeny of South Dakota State 6-0, 7-5.
Falcon and Hedberg were the champions of the Minnesota doubles flight, while Liza Wischer and Reka Kelemen of Iowa State won the Golden Doubles Flight and Kirby Bridges and Marianne Cicmanec of Nebraska took the Gophers Doubles Flight.
Bridges and Cicmanec were also champions in singles as Bridges won the Wild Flight and Cicmanec won the Lynx Flight. Falcon, ranked 15th nationally in singles, won the Vikings Flight with Nicole Kantor of LSU taking the Timberwolves Flight and Finnegan claiming the Twins Flight.
