The University of Minnesota’s Baseline Tennis Center will host the US Open Northern Section Qualifying Tournament starting this Friday, June 21 and running through Sunday, June 23. This is the second year in a row in which the United States Tennis Association (USTA) has selected Baseline Tennis Center as a host site.
Singles winners of this weekend’s event will earn a wild card for the US Open National Qualifying Tournament in August, while mixed doubles champions will receive a wild card for the US Open main draw. USTA Northern is one of 17 sections that make up the USTA.
Current Gopher sophomore Kelsey Frechette will play in the women’s singles tournament. She has a first-round bye and will face the winner of Paulina Bigos and Jessie Aney’s match on Friday at 2 p.m. Bigos, a current Alabama player, and Aney, a Rochester, Minn., teen who won mixed doubles with Gopher Eric Frueh last year, are scheduled to play at 10 a.m.
Former Gopher Julian Dehn will play mixed doubles with Gonzaga’s Melanie Yates, a New Brighton, Minn., native. The pair will face professionals Brian Battistone and Nicole Melichar in the quarterfinals on June 22 at 5 p.m.
