Minnesota's No. 1 singles player, Valerie Vladea (Kitchener, Ontario/ Burlington Central) was named to the All-Big Ten Team on Tuesday, May 1, 2001. Vladea, a freshman, compiled a record of 10-10 in spring matches and a 1-1 record in open play, bringing her total to 11-11 overall, 4-6 in the Big Ten.

Throughout the season, she played against nationally ranked players, inlcuding Northwestern's Colleen Cheng, who is No. 43, and Marquette's Laura Garcia, who is No. 66 in the national rankings.

In nine of Vladea's 10 individual victories in the spring season, the Gophers also went on to win the match. During the month of March, Vladea went on a six-match win streak, only to be defeated during the first match in April by Indiana's Kelly Blanch.

Along with holding the No. 1 singles position, Vladea also played at No. 1 doubles with partner Michaela Havelkova. Together, the two posted a winning record of 13-7 overall, 5-5 in the Big Ten.

Vladea is the daughter of Radu and Claudia Vladea.
