The University of Minnesota women's tennis team saw its season come to an end today with a 5-0 loss to No. 1 seed Michigan in the second round of the Big Ten tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The eighth-seeded Gophers, who beat ninth-seed Iowa 4-2 in the first round yesterday, finished the year with an 8-16 record. Michigan, who is ranked tenth in the country, improved to 21-3 on the year as it advanced to the semifinals.  

The Wolverines earned the doubles point after winning matches at the second and third positions. Alexa Palen and Mariana Spilca were defeated 8-5 to the 65th-ranked tandem of Whitney Taney and Rika Tatsuno at No. 2 doubles. Magdalena Wiecha and Peta Forsyth fell 8-1 at the third slot to Sam Crister and Mimi Nguyen.

Natallia Pintusava and Alessandra Ferrazzi were trailing 7-6 to ninth-ranked Brooke Bolender and Denise Muresan at first doubles when their match was abandoned.  

Michigan, which had four ranked players in their singles lineup, won matches at positions two, three, four and six to earn the 5-0 victory. Matches at the sixth and fourth positions ended concurrently so that is why they score was 5-0 and not 4-0.

Bolender, who is ranked 74th, put Michigan up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Palen at second singles. Ferrazzi's four-year Minnesota career ended with a 6-3, 6-1 loss to the 100th-ranked Taney at third singles.

Freshman Yuliana Umanets fell 6-1, 6-2 to Nguyen at sixth singles, while Wiecha dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Critser, who is ranked No. 66, at fourth singles.

Doron Muravnik, who did not compete in doubles, played Tatsuno at fifth singles. Tatsuno won the first set 6-4, but Muravnik was up 5-3 in the second set when the match was abandoned. Pintusava was trailing Muresan 6-3, 4-1 when their match was abandoned at first singles.
